Period 1/2 English 7th:

.Welcome Parents and Students:
This 7th grade English Course is designed to place emphasis on Standards Based Education, with lessons geared around four areas in the California State Standards Framework: Reading, writing, speaking and listening. Lessons are strategically planned to cover the State Standards.
Most of the emphasis will be placed on taking a critical look at reading and writing strategies and techniques, then analyzing and responding to various works of literature. Key areas of emphasis are:
1.0 Clarify word meaning through the use of definition, example, restatement, or contrast.
2.3 Analyze text that uses the cause and effect organizational pattern.
3.3 Analyze characterization as delineated through a character’s thoughts, words, speech patterns, and actions; the narrator’s description; and the thoughts, words and actions of other characters.
1.1 Create organizational structure that balances all aspects of the composition and uses effective transitions between sentences to unify important ideas.
2.0 Students will write narrative, expository, persuasive and descriptive texts of at least 500 to 700 words in each genre.
HOMEWORK: Students are required to read 20 to 30 minutes a night. Reading logs are issued to students on Monday and turned in the following Monday with the parents signature.
Due Monday, November 9th - Summary on the article, "Triumph Over Tourettes"
Additional homework is given based on the assignment for the week, usually three times a week.

Book Report Mosaic due November 30, 2009 - Students received template and instructions on Friday, November 6, 2009.

Homework - Monday, November 9, 2009: (Extended to TUESDAY)
Complete summary writing assignment, "Triumph Over Tourettes" turn in Tuesday.
Homework - Thursday, November 12, 2009: "Reread the persuasive text, "Girls in the Huddle" answer the four questions, What makes this article persuasive?
